This move highlights China's vital role in our tourism sector, helping to grow trade and business, and connecting families and friends across the Tasman.
A Strong Foundation: Already Welcoming Visa Options
It's worth remembering that New Zealand already has a very welcoming approach for Chinese nationals. Most Chinese visitors currently enjoy a 5-year multiple entry visitor visa, which offers incredible flexibility for return visits and longer stays. This really shows how important the relationship between our two nations is.
The Game Changer: NZeTA for Chinese Tourists from Australia!
The most exciting development, set to launch in November 2025 for a 12-month trial, is the introduction of the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) for eligible Chinese tourists.
What does this mean for you?
If you're a Chinese national traveling from Australia and you hold a valid Australian visitor, work, student, or family visa, you'll soon be able to visit New Zealand for up to 3 months with an NZeTA, instead of needing to apply for a full visitor visa!
This is a huge step in simplifying the process, making cross-Tasman travel much more seamless. Imagine exploring Australia's vibrant cities and then effortlessly hopping over to discover New Zealand's stunning fiords, geothermal wonders, and rich Māori culture – all with the ease of an NZeTA.
Important Note: This NZeTA pathway is specifically for those traveling directly from Australia.6 It doesn't include people just transiting through Australia. You'll still need to meet the standard requirements for an NZeTA, including health and character checks.
